You can't tell if anyone else has a lock without contacting the
repository. But a no-entry overlay for read-only files sounds good to
me.

Petition uncle Bill to increase the limit in the next version of Windows
;-)
It has been suggested that we should collaborate with TCVS better, and
have a shared overlay provider, but no-one has come up with a good
suggestion for how that might work yet.

I think that's already in 'check for mods'.
