In the sci.engre.color thread [1], you'll find this link to a version of those
color patches on a gray background:

As you can see, there's already the effect that the bottom patches have
perceptively different colors, but really are the same.

As I have learned from the links you provided, CIELAB provides a mixture of
large color order and small color differences, so that dE* is good suited for
the judgement of color printers and print shops (where the differences will be
small), but becomes useless above 5 units. Maybe one should dig into the
references mentioned in that thread for more enlightment.

CIE was established 1931?, the L*a*b* specification around 1976, I think.
That doesn't render it invalid by any measure, but since the website
mentioned that it had (in their opinion large) flaws, I thought you
might have knowledge of a more modern specification.
