I'd say that open source solutions in this area are even better suited
for bigger projects with more developers! Or would you really use e.g.
VSS for a really big project? Even MS now doesn't recommend it anymore
for bigger projects! (If you don't believe it: read the new docs for
VS.NET2005 and the TeamSystem package).

If you can wait another month or two (but not more!), then Subversion
will have locking support. Today, the locking stuff got merged from the
branch to trunk which means it reached a pretty stable state. The plan
(as mentioned on the Subversion mailing list) is to create the first RC
branch for the locking stuff (version 1.2) in about two weeks. Then,
depending on bugs discovered, the version 1.2 will be released in
another 2-4 weeks.

Not yet, but as mentioned above: you can have full locking support in
about 4-6 weeks.
