Thanks for the tips, however if read my original post you will see that I
did all of those things before bothering anyone on the dev list

If you right click on a subversion folder and pick subversion settings,
there
are several options that need to be deselected to improve performance. One
of
them disables tortoise to recurse sub-folders to get status - disable this
option. The other option is show folderstatus. Both are under the Look
and
feel tab.
