I agree with most of this, however

And I would agree with that entirely, if it was *syntax* we were talking
about. But it's not, it's semantics really, and when it comes to that,
then we do have to be careful not to get too far away from SVN.

I haven't closely enough followed the SVN design process to denounce this
as merely 'broken', but even if I could, I think we're still stuck with it,
unfortunately.
