What about an UI option called "TCVS compatabilty mode" (or something

yes = use a number of icon overlays slots so that tcvs does not get
disturbed
no = use as much as nessesary icon overlays slots
Or may be the user can choose the number of overlay slots he wants to
use... You can add some kind of priority list to decide which icons
should be shown if this number is smaller than the number of svn
statuses (of stati, don't know the exact plural form of status :) )
