No doubt the author of Scintilla was still trying to overcome his vi
habit when he wrote that. ;)

I hear your call for staying with standards. But perhaps it can be
conceptualized this way: The Commit dialog is *like* an application --
it's the main window that does stuff. When you double click a file in
the bottom pane the diff window of TMerge that pops up is *like* a
dialog -- you just want to quickly check something and close it easily.
  Disregarding what functions the actual code is calling the behaviour
of the commit dialog to the TMerge diff window is like that of
application to dialog.

At least that's how I see it, but maybe you'll call me deranged. ;)
