I checked out project/trunk. Checking out just project would have
created /checkoutdir/trunk, right?

Perhaps some more detail:

My working folder is
/aspxroot/(files)
which corresponds to
/aspxroot/trunk/(files)
in the repository at the moment.

Now we are moving towards a new release and I want to tag the current
development as well as create a branch for hotfix development and keep
the current trunk für next version development.

To create the branch I selected "branch/tag" from the context menu, then
From: [repository]/aspxroot/trunk/
To: [repository]/aspxroot/branches/versionnumber/

This leaves me with
[repository]/aspxroot/branches/versionnumber/trunk/(files)
in the repository afterwards.
