Yes, the tooltip and docs are absolutely clear, but the name on the checkbox
itself is ambiguous so he does have a point. You might consider one of these
alternatives:
"Enable recursive folder overlays"
"Folder overlays act recursively"
(yes I know an overlay doesn't really 'act', but you know what I mean)
Or something better...

Also, you might consider extending the time the tooltip is displayed from 5
seconds to 10. Some of them contain enough text that you have to read quite
fast to get to the end before the bubble bursts.
