Yes, I think this is bad too.

I have mailed all my users this morning to ask them *not* to upgrade.

This is the 'gold-plated' version - it seems to me that a simpler solution
is that the software should just do a >= test on the version number (or
just the build number portion) from the website. The website could have
then been left advertising 1.0.8.

I would have thought that anyone who wanted to run a beta version would
have been following either the mailing list or the website - using the
auto-notification for them seems unnecessary, and is a distraction to
'conservative' users who want to wait for 'full' releases.
