I once worked for a company where we had to write software that had to
support Windows NT 4.0. It was infact a big problem to keep NT4 system
up-to-date with current shell techniques.

If I remember, to get a missing shell32.dll Version 4.72 onto that system,
the procedure was as follows, and there was no known way around it:

- If you have any internet explorer >= version 4 on that system,
  uninstall it completely.

- Install Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 (or was it SP3?), exactly that version,

WITH the desktop extensions (or whatever they are called in English).

- Now update to the current internet explorer.

And you're done ;-)

I once heard there is a command line option in the setup of the latest
internet explorer that eliminates the need for uninstall-install-install,
but I don't know it.
