When you checkout a project, if all of the Eclipse files like .project
and .classpath that tell Eclipse what type of project it is, are not
in the repository, then you need to use the option to run the New
Project wizard while checking out. If you do not run the wizard and
select a Java project and configure the settings, then all you get is
a "Simple Project" which is nothing more than a file browser.

So delete the project and checkout again. Subclipse will detect if
the .project file is in the repository and set the checkout wizard
choice appropriately. If it is not there, use the option Subclipse
suggests which is to run the New Project wizard. When you run that
wizard, you need to create a new Java Project.
