Did you see this issue with mention of the setting being grayed out?
I have also seen lots of forum threads and blogs about it, but they all
have the possibility of choosing JavaHL in the preferences. At least
they can click on it and get an error-message from eclipse, if eclipse
have problems with it.

I can't select it. As Mark has pointed out, this is not part of the
original code. So I'm having trouble believing that symlinking the .so
file would help anything. But I'll give it a go... What directory is the
plugin dir? Is it this one?

/usr/share/eclipse/plugins/org.tigris.subversion.subclipse.core_1.2.2/
