It is not Subclipse doing the reading or writing, it is Subversion. As
long as you have a valid area it seems to work, but JavaHL appears to have
a bug in creating the area.

Subclipse has an option to point Subversion at a specific area. This is
kind of the equivalent of using the --config-dir switch when using the
command line.
