I don't use svn:externals, so it can't be the cause.

I'm using JavaSVN 1.0.6. My repository is acessible both by http:// and
svn://, and the URL that caused this error was http://. I changed it to
svn://, and the problem went away. Hope this helps finding the cause.
I don't think Eclipse should be swallowing exceptions, have you reported
a bug on this?
