For anyone who has the same problem, I deleted ~/.eclipse and it's all
working now.

By the way, I suspect that the reason we had to delete
<ECLIPSEROOT>/configurations instead of running "eclipse -clean" is that
the directory is owned by root, so running "eclipse -clean" as non-root
won't do anything.
