I am also a Linux beginner so I know how you feel.

I ran into the exact same problems. The problem is that when you ran
./make configure, the configure process was not able to figure out what
Java tools you have availble for building Java. You can fix that by
passing some additional switches to configure.

Now if only I could remember what they are ....

Perhaps something like this?

http://sources.redhat.com/ml/subversion-dev/2004-10/msg01782.html

The switches in that link are similar to what I used. I think I had to
pass it the location of my JDK. and also some other switch to disable
Jikes. Once I did that, it all worked. If anyone knows how you can
discover what switches you passed to configure after the fact, I can go
back and look it up.

Mark
