(I know the conversation has moved on, but...)

I thought the Synchronization view did perform magic. I couldn't
believe what I was missing when I saw what it did with conflicts - red
boxes around the code! But I can see why it wouldn't be popular -
nothing (especially source control) is meant to be that easy to use.

It's only impossible to do completely from within Eclipse. Big deal. If
you're on Windows, TortoiseSVN handles this beautifully. If not, it can
be
done with the command-line tools. It's not like the Synchronization view
is
performing magic.
