problems checking out

After using subclipse for a while successfully, I ran into bunch of
snags that seem irrelated, but all happened at the same time. First, I
lost the ability to check out projects. It would work for a while, get
about half of the files in the project then throw an error and quit.
Checking out from the command line worked fine.

Thankfully, checking out seems to be working now (no idea why), but the
normally hidden .svn folder is showing up in a few of my directories.

Any ideas on what could be causing my problems?
