What's the plan for 1.8?

It's been over 3 months since 1.7 (6 months since the branch), we've
had some good feedback, as well as a bit of bugs reported and fixed.
I've heard various "estimates" about 1.8, but I'd like to have a brief
discussion about what people's expectations are, both surrounding
content and date.

I know a few features have already made it onto trunk with the hopes
of releasing soon-ish, and we've got a couple things on branches as
well. What's the plan to polish them for release?
