If our current situation is complicated, I'd say it's complicated primarily
by the lack of predictability in the namespaces of individual branches and
tags. Would you agree? If not, you needn't read further.

The one thing that's consistent across nearly all Subversion repository
layouts I've ever seen is that "trunk" means something particular, and that
folks care about that meaning. Losing that distinction by relegating the
conceptual trunk of development to just another branch tossed into a
directory which is a semi-chaotic mix of other branches might satisfy your
(and my, to be honest) intellectual itch to keep similar things grouped
together. But this is one area where achieving consistency of one sort
comes at the cost of consistency of another, and its the other sort (the
current sort, the sort that makes /trunk easy to find everywhere you look)
that has more value.
