Let me please add that I started off using Subversion using trunk/branches/tags as per the book.
It "feels" a little hypocritical to do otherwise.

If it was wrong.... and we now felt that there was a far better way to design your repository - then I say sure, go for it.
We should lead by example - we should have best-practice in-place for our own repository.

Sorry, but I'm not seeing best-practice - just different.
