copy --depth option?

I am trying to create a "sparse branch"? - copy one directory to another
location in our project, but only include some of its subpaths.

I noticed that the copy subcommand doesn't support the --depth option -
is this a reasonable feature request for the issue tracker?

Given that the copy subcommand does not support --depth, what is the
correct way to create a "sparse branch"? Is there a way to create a
sparse branch? Is it a mistake to create sparse branches?
