The abort you're seeing is actually hiding a problem with your
connection or the XML parsing. It's aborting because it doens't have a
place to store that error and pass it back to the higher layers. The
abort was fixed in r31537 on trunk, but not backported to 1.5.5.

In general, I can't recommend using serf with 1.5.x. In 1.6 works
pretty well (for me atleast).
