We (i.e. the two of us) may be using the english version of the word
even when speaking German, but that does not mean the rest of the
world has to do so as well.

Take a look at pl.po. There are very few english words in the polish
strings, and 'merge' isn't one of them.

For example:

        msgid "Merge conflict during commit"
        msgstr "Konflikt ��czenia zmian w trakcie zatwierdzania"

And if you check the German translation, it does not follow our use
of the word either:

        msgid "Merge conflict during commit"
        msgstr "Konflikt beim Zusammenf�hren w�hrend der �bertragung"

I'd say current translation practice pretty much mandates that
these strings be translatable.
