I don't see what a newsgroup would solve that isn't already solved by the
mailing list.

If you don't understand something in the book or need help with things not
covered in the book, the users_at_subversion.tigris.org is the place to ask for
enlightenment. People here are polite and help you if you're polite as
well :-) You can even search for past messages:

http://svn.haxx.se/

You will find several years of discussions here. Chances are you have a
problem that others already had. And if not: just tell the nice people on the
users@ mailing list what you want to do and which problems you've encountered
and you normally get an answer within a day or so.

Spam isn't a problem here as these lists are moderated.
