I've read quite a bit on tree conflicts in the archives, but I've
never seen these particular use cases being discussed on the list.
Do you have a link to a previous discussion of these use cases?
I'd really like to read it.

That is no problem. By all means, focus on getting 1.5 out the door.
It clearly has a higher priority right now. We don't want to block 1.5.
