It's pretty clear that Karl needs a distributed version control
system. If we were distributed, we'd probably set up a "main"
repository and a "staging" repository. Karl would commit half-broken
patches to 'staging' just to make offsite backups of his patches.
When the patch is done, Karl would then merge all his commits from
staging as one big commit to the 'main' repos, with a reasonable log
message. (And of course, we'd only send commit-email diffs from the
'main' repos.)
