Remaining issues with FSFS reshard script?

Currently, the tools/server-side/fsfs-reshard.py script doesn't let
you run it, and gives the error "This script is unfinished and not
ready to be used on live data. Trust us." This has been the case
since April. The only deficiency that I see described either in the
comment block at the header or in the mailing list thread in April is
the fact that it converts from "layout sharded N" to "layout sharded
M" via "layout linear", which is very inefficient.

Are we confident now that the script is ready to be used on live data?
If not, can we decide why (Malcolm?) and create an milestone-1.5
issue for finishing it in the tracker?
