Er, to be perfectly clear, here's the deal:

             | 1.4 server | trunk server
-------------+--------------------------+------------------------
1.4 client | error, no stderr | error, no stderr
trunk client | falsely reports success | falsely reports success

So, yes, I would guess that the server is failing to marshal the
hook's stderr, while the dav refactoring is what broke the error
reporting of any kind at all.
