A unified interface to different VC systems is certainly desirable,
but many, perhaps most of them, already have their own special-purpose
Emacs modes. Subversion has two (dsvn and psvn) and unless the new
mode subsumes these in terms of functionality and easy of use, the
more demanding users will stick to what they have and the unified code
will not get the testing or contributions it may deserve.
