I really don't think you fully understand Peter's situation.

Since this is *our* codebase, I'm very willing to accede to
preferences of *our* developers.

FWIW, I'm also against going over 80 characters: telling me to resize
my windows is downright silly. I like my 80x25 xterms very much. --
