Thanks for looking into this again. Back in January, the issue already seemed to be fixed in trunk.

Same thing with the version I checked out on March 3 (I had to tweak the configure script to accept my APR 0.9.6 though). I've done some 30 check-ins, many including a history file in / and a few also straddling multiple directories off /, with no problems.

So, whatever you changed now is probably not be the entire fix that would need to be backported for 1.4.x.

I just retrieved r23774 and will continue working with that (client).

P.S. Getting 1.5 sooner rather than later would be great!
