In general I have also run into issues diff'ing and merging branches
with gratuitous whitespace differences. As such I am in total
agreement. After people have been burned once they are forever twice
shy. But people just starting out will not have that experience yet.

I just reviewed the HACKING guidelines and did not see any help there
to guide people on this topic. Without being able to suggest anything
useful to say there let me still suggest that I think this would be a
great topic for the HACKING file. This would help people contributing
to have a good patch and commit process. I know that many projects
have a strict whitespace policy enforced by pre-commit scripts.
