I'm fine with just about any name change, since those are trivial
to implement at any stage during the development of the feature.
(The semantics were my main concern here.) I'll let a few other
names float up and then we'll settle on one.

Well, I think so. The change from "0" to "empty" should be just
a name change -- the semantics of that depth haven't changed.
It's the depth:1 splitting into two new depths that's the complex
thing here...

So far that's for internal use only, not meant to be exposed to the
user. Thus, I don't know what functionality you had in mind :-).
