Sorry, I missed this... It seems you could display a German message here.

So, these two messages are the problem. Messages are marked with _(),
translations for them are available in de.po, and environment variables
for locale are correctly set with your shell, but they are not translated
in the output??
At least for Japanese, messages are correctly localized in my environment
for the same action.

Sorry, I mean "correctly localized for messages whose translations are
available". The first one cannot be displayed in German since it is not
translated. So, There is no problem in this latter environment.

Yes. GNU Gettext is not an automatic translation system. Messages are
translated only when it is translated in the po file.
