I'm interested in this improvement, but haven't had time to look at it
in detail. I think it is good to be able to tell for sure whether two
files are identical or not (without byte-by-byte comparison), not as
much for the space savings, as because of merge/diff speed on feature
branches.

May get time to look into this further later on...
