Ah, OK. Well I still think r19594 is a good patch, because it removes
unnecessary duplication of effort (we were using two different methods
to choose between 'getopt' and 'gnu_getopt', and r19594 reduces it to
one.)

I can't reproduce the test failures on any of my machines which use
Python 2.3 or Python 2.4, but I do see that Python 2.2 has some
problems with the tests because the test suite uses methods which are
new in Python 2.3.
