Thanks for the detailed report. This appears to be issue 2522, which
is fixed in the 1.4.x line (and indeed, your script works correctly in
a current trunk build).

I don't know how realistic it might be to backport the changes to 1.3.x
(they look pretty simple by themselves, but I don't know if they depend
upon other changes in 1.4.x). Ivan?
