Well, what I *think* I'd really want would be some kind of patch manager:
- Hey, store away my patch in progress so I can do this little bugfix.
- Now, reapply my patch (including tree changes), so I can continue on my
  new killer feature.

This is clearly a bigger task and maybe it doesn't even belong in the
SCM itslef, so I think your proposal is a step in the right direction,
so +1.
