I agree, but if one can avoid control characters without drawbacks,
that's better.

I like mark benedetto king's proposition very much, i.e. something like:

Nfoo.xml
R19127
T2006-04-14T04:13:41.000000Z
Ajrandom
Kfile
...more attributes...
X

IMHO, it is more readable, less prone to bugs, more flexible, more
extensible, and with slightly easier corruption detection.
