This is not the only problem (see my other message about all the
problems). In general, avoiding control characters in file formats
would make bug report easier to write/understand, and ditto for
discussions.

So, the \ character needs to be escaped too. In this case, wouldn't
it be better to have a single \ in a line as the record terminator?
