Preaching to the choir I'm sure, but Windows antivirus packages
frequently require uninstalling to completely remove their effects.
Because they hook deep into the filesystem, disabling them only means
they return immediately from the hook, but doesn't remove the hook
itself. This alone can slow things down just as much as active scanning
(depends on the AV package).

Just offering a data point...
