fs-atomic-renames: sync with trunk or rebranch?

So I spent a few hours today trying to get the fs-atomic-renames up to
date with regard to what's happened lately in trunk. For the curious,
the last merge to that branch was around revision 16183, so a lot has
changed.

I finally got things merged and functional, but before I commit this
354328 line diff (yay for space-before-paren changes), I suppose I
should ask, would people prefer if we just cleanly rebranch this from
trunk? Anyone have strong opinions on this?
