Actually you can, by manually adding a "References:" header to your
mail and giving it values taken from the "References:" and
"Message-Id:" headers of some message in the thread. Also you should
match the "Subject:", of course, but you already did that.

I have used this technique before to get fully embedded into an old
thread; it works like a charm.

CC'ing the list so others will know they can do this.
