The r15287 situation (was: Re: [PATCH] Extending r15287 for issue #2264 - v3)

Hi,

I've been trying to get this fixed today, but it was more work than I
expected. My latest patch is attached, but it causes test failures.
(probably some trivial stuff that I shouldn't send to the list). I want to
get this done, since the reversion is a little tricky as well, but I have
to leave now for some (ca 5) hours. If someone wants to do my debugging,
feel
free to. Else, the branching for 1.3 will have to wait for me fixing this,
or someone else reverting Karl's commit (and my trivial follow-up).
