Actually, you might want to look at Insurrection - you can get the
change log for any part of the repository, including the whole
thing or just sub-trees, and all with direct access to the
files and diffs for each revision.

(Yes, this is one of the reasons I wrote the Insurrection tools -
I was not really pleased with the ViewCVS structure as it was still
very much file based, which is understandable since it came from the
CVS world.)
