Fair enough. The main advantage is that you don't need to worry about
defining a format or parsing it from the log. I also think it is nice to
keep different pieces of meta-data separate (e.g. make the data more
structured than free-form), but that is a more debatable point.

On the other hand, I agree that the advantage you mention is obvious! :)
