Right, improving performance of existing code is (too) expensive.
But when implementing a *new* feature, it is cheap to choose
a design so that new code doesn't worsen the situation.

Believe me:
If you decide for a design making performance even worse for TSVN,
you will get much more "offensive" feedback than mine ;-)
