Is it feasible to merge the spec files and use a --define with rpmbuild to
specify the distro? There might even be a way to detect distros
automagically, such as using some special predefined macro.

Something like this is done with the SpamAssassin tarball to handle
different compression methods. One builds with, for example, "rpmbuild -ta
--define 'srcext .bz2' Mail-SpamAssassin-3.0.2.tar.bz2" for the bzip2'd
